CATHERINE BLACK
Our mother (Yvonne Kay Marshall) did research on Catherine Black for years. This was taken from her genealogy notes, you can see them in the DATABASE under Catherine Black & George Young below.

Catherine Black was born about 1833 in Bonesssan, Isle of Mull, Argyll,Scotland. She died on 9 Sep. 1898 in Rocksprings, Sweetwater, WY. Catherine’s birth date appears to be 1833. The evidence from 1851, 1861 and 1881 census lead to that conclusion. Catherine gave her age in 1851 as 18 yrs. old; in 1861 as 29 yrs. old; and in 1881 as 48 yrs. old. The only date that is different is the age that is reported on her daughter, Janet’s (1855),birth record. Catherine’s husband George, gave her age as 26 yrs. old at that time. The record indicated that she was probably not present when her husband gave the information following Janet’s birth. It’s possible the recorder made an error or George didn't remember her age correctly.
Bonessan, where Catherine says she was born, is a village in Kilfinichen and Kilvicekeon parish, Isle of Mull. She gave this as her place of birth in the 1851 census. In the 1861 census she simply gave Isle of Mull as her birth place. It is a family tradition that Catherine was very proud of being born on the Isle of Mull.

The following is the history that my Aunt Katie - Catherine (Katie) Black Blyth Hamilton, Margaret Young’s oldest daughter gave me about her grandmother, Catherine Black. “Catherine’s" parents both died when she was a young girl. She was raised by an aunt and uncle. She worked in the woolen mills in Iverness and was raised in Iverness. When her aunt and uncle decided to go to Canada she didn’t want to go so she stayed in Scotland and married while still very young. The aunts and uncle’s name was Black. Her uncle was her father’s brother.”
Catherine’s parents names are given as Isobell MacDougal and Lauchlan Black on the Temple Ordinance records and Catherine’s birth date given as 1830. It appeared that the information was given by Maude Rhodes Young, wife of John Black Young, one of Catherine’s Black’s sons. However, when I contacted Maude in 1952, she said that Catherine was born about 1834 not 1830. The only OPR record I can find of a marriage in Argyl for Isobell McDougall and Lauchlan Black is in 1844. So these may not have been her real parents, or they may have been her aunt and uncle or married after their first few children were born sometime before she met and married George. She had reason and means to move to the Parish of Newbattle. Their marriage banns stated that she was living in the Parish of Newbattle. I wonder if she had relatives living there?
I found out that the McLucas and McDougal names were interchangeable. That came about during a time when many of the highland people were pressured to change their names. So Catherine’s mother could have been a McLucas.
Marriage:
Both George Young and Catherine Black were of Newbattle Parish when they were married. However, birth record of their daughter Janet (1855) says they were married in Stobhill, a hamlet in the parish of Newbattle.
Catherine Black was thought to be very young when married-Possibly only 14 yrs old and George Young was possibly only 19 yrs old, however, Later information indicates that Catherine was not that young. George was very active with the missionaries and in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints ab.1882/83. He had to also move around quite a bit because the mines would close. (Information from. my Aunt Katie.- Catherine (Katie) Black Blyth Hamilton)

Catherine was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints between 1850 and 1865. I can’t find where I obtained that information now. Temple ordinance Baptism done for Catherine by her son John Young (actually by his wife Maude Rhodes) 7 Feb 1906 in the Salt Lake Temple.
