George Huse Shiner
Family HistoryTo give you a point of reference, George H. Shiner is Irene Jones Marshall's Great Grandfather
This history was found among Dad’s(B.Vaughn Marshall) genealogy notes, along with the history of George William Shiner. There was no reference to who wrote this, but we wanted to share the information regardless. It appears this was Nana’s (Irene Jone’s) Great Grandfather. The story is retyped exactly as it was written, the question marks were put in by the original author.
George Huse Shiner and his sister Cynthia were left orphans at an early age, and were raised by their maternal grandmother, Sarah Lister, on a little farm on the Obequrom (?) about four miles east of Winchester Va.
His father’s name may have been George Shiner. His grandmother and sister Cynthia lived with him until they died. Cynthia was a cripple from rheumatism for years. Aunt Jane Strickland has an old snuff box that belonged to Cynthia. She thinks there was an old bible with her name on it. She also has an old ? that grandfather Tobias R. Shiner used in Virginia. George Huse Shiner was a miller by trade and ran the Carter’s Mill on Apequom creek four miles east of Winchester for years. It was a water grist mill.
James Pierce lived near Druves (or Durus) landing on the Mississippi river in the southeast corner of Missouri.
Alford Pierce lived at state line (city) end of east of Chicago. Mary or Pollo Gibbins lived in Sangamon Co. ILL. Near Springfield. Sarah or Sally Griffin lived in Bode Axe Co. Wis. George Griffin, her son, lived with uncle George Shiner in Illinois one winter about 1855, he also was in the civil war 8th Wisconsin Infantry.
These addresses at the time of the civil war 1865.
Tobias Riely Shiner Sr. said there might be more Shiners down in Texas, for he had an uncle or great uncle that left Virginia in a early day for Missouri and afterwards went to Texas. This uncle was single when he left Virginia. Traditions say that there were two Shiner brothers who came to America from the old country, (which one not known) two or three generations before his time.
Michael Pierce and wife married probably in Germany. Mr. Pierce was a German sea captain and landed in Frederick Co. Va. About two months before the birth of Rachel Curlet Pierce, April 1, 1800 and never went to sea again. They soon moved to what is now Harrison Co. Va. Where they raised their family and both died and are buried.
