George William Shiner who died here Oct. 1st . was born Feb. 11, 1835 in Virginia son of George Huse and Rachel Shiner.
The family moved when the subject of this sketch was only a few month old.
He married Janet Lefler 4 Nov. 1856. He inlisted in the Union Army Jan. 1, 1864 in Iowa Infantry and served during the remainder of the civil war. When he was mustered out of service he became a farmer and in 1872 planned to go to Oregon. An uncle of his wife, a Mormon elder explained the gospel to him and he promised to stop on his way to the north west and investigate the “Mormonism”.
George came to Utah bringing his family, wife, five sons and two daughters. He worked in a brick yard and bought an interest in a saw mill in Mill Creek Canyon. He lived in Salt Lake County until 1881 when he moved to Sempete. In 1889 he moved to Fremont, Wayne County, from there in 1895 he moved to Castle Dale, Utah where he lived the remainder of his life.
He is survived by his wife who is 77 years old, six sons, four daughters, 90 grandchildren and 52 great grandchildren.
