John Johnson Thayn - Born 1825 | Sidney Boyer - Born 1824 |
John Johnson Thayn was born in Glasgow, Scotland, November 11, 1825. When he was about two years old he came to Canada with his family. Soon after they arrived his father died. His mother was unable to support all of the children, so the oldest boy, Ebenezer, was let out to work for his board. There were only two boys but there were four girls. Following are the names of the children: Ellen, Jane, Ebenezer, Janet, John Johnson and Fanny.
John Johnson Thayn married Sidney Boyer in Canada. While living there, four children were born to them, Mary Ann, Nephi, John Lehi, and Ellen Jane. He then came to the United States and Settled in the state of Iowa. I think four more children were born to them while living there; Emma, Fanny, Eliza Catherine, and Janet. In 1861 they came to Utah. They had believed the gospel, but had not been baptized. When they were ready to leave from Council Bluffs as an independent company there were two girls from England wanting to come. He was asked if he could take one of them with his company and was told he could take his pick, so he picked one. Her name was Elizabeth Hunt. When they arrived in Salt lake, Elizabeth lived with the family for about one year and then John Johnson took her to be his second wife. They were married on the 25th of October 1862. To them were born five boys; Joseph, who died as a baby, William Alvin, Brigham, Edgar and Ebenezer. Elizabeth’s son Joseph, and Sidney’s son, Hyrum were born the same day, Nov. 8, 1863. Sidney gave birth to two more children while living in Salt lake.
They lived in Salt Lake and vicinity having a saw mill up Mill Creek Canyon, also one in Thayne Canyon. Elizabeth lived at the sawmill part of the time while Sidney lived in Salt Lake. At times they both lived in the same house.
Elizabeth died and was buried in Salt Lake City on June 21, 1875 when Ebenezer was just 10 months old. Sidney took all the children and raised them as her own. Shortly after, enemies or someone who was jealous, burned one sawmill down and he lost most of his property. They moved to Woodland, Utah, taking the other sawmill where they operated it in Rily’s Canyon. Here they also farmed using oxen for teams for plowing and logging. The land was so rocky they had to haul the rocks off before planting. When they planted their grain they had to take long willows and tie together and tied the oxen to them going up and down to cover the wheat. When they harvested it they had to use a cradle and bind it by hand.
They built a water power mill and put in a picket and lathe mill which was run by a turbine wheel. They sawed and sold some of the lumber but most of it was made into pickets and lather. The timber came from the head waters of the Provo River, cutting it early and floating the logs down the river 12 to 25 miles.
In October 1886 part of the family moved to Wellington, Utah. The rest came in November of the same year. The first group stayed with Sidney and her husband, Ephriam Green. After the others came they lived in a one room log cabin belonging to Ben Buchanin on the south side of the track close to the river on the old Jessen Farm. Eliza, and her husband, Elisha Jones came to Wellington with the last group, all living in the same house. The boys slept out in the wagon box as there was not enough room in the house. In the Spring they went up to Pine Canyon and got out logs to build a new house, which was John Johnson’s home from then on.
In May 1901 Sidney died and was buried in Wellington, Utah. John Johnson’s son, Ebenezer bought his father’s home and from this time on John Johnson made his home with Ebenezer and his family. He died 21 May 1910 and was buried beside his wife, Sidney.
John Johnson served a mission to Canada, England, and Scotland. 1878-80. For more on this read history by Alvin Thayn. (under The Thayn Family History the name is shown as William Alvin Thayn)
